Top Dawg Entertainment has a new artist: Reason. While we don't know a whole lot about the emcee, who released his first song through the label today along with the announcement, we do know that he made an appearance on the Kendrick Lamar and Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith executive-curated Black Panther soundtrack, adding a verse to "Seasons."
Around that time, Reason did an interview with Rolling Out in which he discussed how he landed the placement. "My team and I worked extremely hard last year, but it was actually a mix of being in the right place at the right time," he said. "Another rapper I won’t mention was supposed to have that verse. They were taking a while to get it over to Kendrick and he reached out through a mutual connection and told me to give it a try. He loved what I did so much that he ran with the verse I wrote and moved it to the end of the song."
Later in the conversation, he described his sound. "I think my music is extremely soulful. Top [Dawg] used that word when I first met him and it was ironic because I’ve always marketed my music as such," he said. "I think it speaks to you and paints pictures as you listen." With that being said, it is no surprise that his first release for the label is titled "The Soul."
Reason joins more recent signees to the label like Zacari, SiR, and Lance Skiiiwalker. The label also holds the talents of Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q, SZA, and Isaiah Rashad.
