Brandy and Monica made waves with their joint track, "Boy Is Mine." It became a fan favorite, remaining at the top stop on Billboard 100 for 13 consecutive weeks. The iconic track has now been given a contemporary spin more than 20 years since its release by Sevyn Streeter and Justine Skye. Monica's part was bodied by Skye while Streeter breathed life in Brandy's. The duo performed the famous tune during the 2019 Trumpet Awards in Atlanta on Saturday, January 19. Check out an unofficial snippet of their rendition below.
The duet was produced by the prolific Darkchild producer, Rodney Jerkins, and was performed in celebration of his work during the award ceremony. Jerkins was honored with the Music Excellence Award during the event. He is most known for his musical contributions to records by artist like Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Destiny's Child, and Michael Jackson.
The 2019 Trumpet Awards is scheduled to air on Bounce TV this February 11. Some of the ceremony's honorees include T.I., MC Lyte, and Dapper Dan.
There is no official reason why Brandy and Monica aren't performing the tracks themselves. Both artists are currently working on new music, which would make schedule conflicts likely. Perhaps they are simply focusing on the future. Either way, their fans seem to approve of the cover.
