A gunman killed the Russian ambassador to Turkey at an art exhibit in Ankara. The lone shooter was shouting "God is great" and "don't forget Aleppo, don't forget Syria," reports say.

A graphic video of the assassination shows the ambassador Andrey G. Karlov speaking at Ankara's Contemporary Art Center, as the suspect, described by Ankara's mayor as a police officer, fires several shots at him. Karlov later died of his wounds.

Turkish officials said the gunman was later killed in a shootout with Turkish Special Forces.

Russian president Vladimir Putin condemned the assassination, calling it a terrorist attack, according to reports.

The attack comes days after Russian involvement in the assault on Aleppo where killings and mass destruction occurred according to several sources.
