With PRhyme 2 dropping on March 16th, Royce and Primo slide through the Hot 97 studios to deliver ten minutes of greatness. At this point, few can dispute that Royce Da 5'9" is a top tier lyricist. It's only appropriate that the bar-loving Funkmaster Flex reached out to the Detroit legend and his partner in crime, the equally celebrated DJ Premier.
"I was at the crib minding my own business, being peaceful, asleep," says Royce. "Flex calls me, and says come to New York and bust a rap. So this is where I'm at now. So I may or may not promote a lot of violence, I may or may not use a lot of profanity, I apologize in advance." Over the classic "NY State Of Mind" instrumental, Royce follows in Black Thought's footsteps and goes in for ten minutes, delivering quotables in abundance. "I go bananas, too miraculous to react to mortal mammals, cooking crack in my new velour pajamas," spits Royce, and that's merely one bar.
If you're a fan of radio freestyles, this one should do the trick. While perhaps not as intense as Black Thought's GOAT session, Royce is more than capable of holding his own; up and coming rappers should look to him as an exemplary leader. It's kind of scary, as it almost seems like he's only playing on this one. Who knows what the future has in store?
Stay tuned for PRhyme 2 and The Book Of Ryan coming soon. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and check out this freestyle.
