Nicki Minaj pre-emptively told the world that she had quit music last year before clarifying that she was just going on a hiatus. The legendary female rapper has been focusing on her family in recent months, releasing a return single and appearing for a few features here and there. Her biggest musical appearance in months -- or perhaps even years, considering how this is her biggest chart success -- comes on Doja Cat's "Say So" remix. The song marks the first time that Doja Cat and Nicki Minaj have gone #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, finally allowing the Queen to get some much-needed shine.
Rumors had begun popping off about how Nicki Minaj was practically begging to get on the remix before it dropped, but she cleared up that story by claiming that she actually was sitting on the feature request for weeks before coming through with her verse.
"I guess I never answered this & I c u guys chatting," said Mrs. Petty on Twitter. "I got a text from josh @ my label saying they got a request from her label. About 2 weeks later, I got another text from Jeff @ mngmnt. I sat on it for a while cuz I couldn’t catch the beat for the life of me really. I was in full quarantine/hiatus mode. No social media. Had no clue what was going on in the music world."
Her mentor Lil Wayne would be proud of how oblivious she became.
Nicki must be insanely pleased with how she was able to turn it out, clocking in her first-ever #1 single before it dropped to #2 this week.
