This weekend, Keep Cool/RCA crooner Lucky Daye dropped off his debut EP I and if you've caught wind of the effort since it landed, it's likely been on a diligent loop.
Opening up with the previously-released "Roll Some Mo" gem, the project never loses it balance once throughout its five-track span. Quite honestly, no R&B effort has energized me quite like this since Arin Ray made a debut with his Phases EP two years ago and it's an energy that's found in anyone who takes a listen to mid-project standout "Extra."
The song, which experiences a track shift midway through, is a strategic one. Whether it’s intentional or not is up for debate. As the first half of the track leans toward the funk-infused soundscapes heard on “Roll Some Mo" and "Late Night," the second half of “Extra" guides us into the more contemporary adaptations of Lucky Daye, best exhibited on the two tracks that follow (“Concentrate" and "Ready For Love").
It's a nod toward the wonderful duality of Lucky's artistry, another win for the blessed ear of Tunji Balogun, and it most certainly has us on the edge of our seats as we await the arrival of the singer's full-length debut Painted.
Quotable Lyrics
I knew it was on when I met her at the bar
We can never turn it off, so we keep it rolling
Wanted to see my room never been to 5 stars
She giving more than her all, yeah she overflowing
