Kay Slay is somewhat of a hip-hop mainstay, having previously set the streets ablaze at the height of the mixtape era. The Drama King has since put forth a variety of compilation albums, with last year's The Big Brother cementing his position on the map. Now, Kay Slay is set to return with a follow-up titled The Hip-Hop Frontline, which features the talents of Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, Dave East, Trick Trick, Don Q, Tony Yayo, The Lox, Joell Ortiz, and Kevin Gates. Today, the latter has come to star on the album's debut single, "I Do This On The Regular," and rest assured that it's far from a mixtape throwaway.
Taking to an up-tempo, piano-based instrumental, Kevin Gates sets it off with his signature soulful, yet imposing presence. Throughout the track, Gates reflects on his situation, openly addressing the controversial kick that landed him in prison. "Half-assed lawyer wasn't really shit, when the system did me out in Florida," he raps, "I was innocent, they said I kicked a bitch steady grabbin' on me while performing, they took me from my only daughter, my sons really need a father." Few can blend vulnerability and passion with technical prowess like Kevin Gates.
Quotable Lyrics
Half-assed lawyer wasn't really shit,
When the system did me out in Florida
I was innocent, they said I kicked a bitch
Steady grabbin' on me while performing
They took me from my only daughter
My sons really need a father
