Jussie Smollett's hate crime case turned into an investigation of his alleged false police report followed by his indictment. The Empire star is believed to have hired two brothers, Abel and Ola Osundairo, to rehearse and carry out the January 29 attack. Recent reports quoted police sources who claim Smollett paid the men $3,500 for their part in the scheme. According to TMZ, physical proof of the payment has now been entered into evidence.
There was indeed a $3,500 check written by Jussie and subsequently deposit by Abel Osundairo. The check was dated January 23, six days before the incident detailed in Smollett's police report. The memo line reads, "5 week Nutrition/Workout program Don't Go."
"Don't Go" is said to be a reference to one of Jussie's songs. The entertainer was planning a music video shoot for the track and was anticipating being filmed while shirtless. Sources say he had gained weight and was aiming to lose 20 of his 192 lbs before the shoot. The day before the alleged attack, Abel texted Jussie: "I know you're traveling today, make sure you get at least 45 mins of cardio." This new information does not prove Jussie's innocence completely, but it may play a part in his defense team's efforts to create reasonable doubt.
