John Legend has always commanded respect in the game. From collaborating with legendary artists like Jay-Z and Kanye West, to being one of the first hip-hop adjacent acts to approach "EGOT" territory, Legend is simply one of those dudes who carries himself with class and integrity. Moreover, Legend has also used his status to champion social causes, speaking in support of Black Lives Matter, defending Colin Kaepernick's right to kneel, and holding nothing back when ripping into Donald Trump. Suffice it to say, Legend has become an influential figure, and his latest visuals for "Penthouse Floor" deliver a socially conscious message with a touch of cinematic class.
In the video, Legend plays a hotel employee who works at a stunning, high end establishment. On the inside, the ostentatious decor paints a clear picture of wealth and status, and, in a somewhat on-the-nose display, one of the hotel's guests is wearing a red "Make America Great Again" hot. Meanwhile, on the outside looking in, a protest rages on. Signs reading "the future is female," and "black lives matter" are thrust in security's face, as Legend delivers a clear message on the current social divide. It's a strong message from Legend, even if the delivery feels a little devoid of subtlety. Still, these are intense times, where the art of subtle messaging is so often cast aside.
If you're into the movement, check out the video from Legend and Chance (who doesn't actually appear in the clip). Recently, John Legend gave props to Eminem's Trump "Ethering" cypher, stating "I love that he made such a bold statement because he risked alienating some of his core fans by doing that, and for him to do that I think is particularly powerful."
