Jared Leto's acting resume is a lengthy one. With a career spanning back to the 90's, he's honed his talents to portray even the most complicated characters. This includes Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club, The Joker in Suicide Squad, and most recently, Niander Wallace in Blade Runner 2049. His upcoming role in the Netflix film, The Outsider has him portraying – you guessed it – an outsider. Leto portrays an American in post-war Japan, who joins the yakuza. Well-known as a method actor, I wouldn't want to run into him as he was filming this movie.
The new trailer shows off Leto as a stone-faced soldier-turned-gang-member; hair slicked back and all. The YouTube description describes the character as "An American soldier imprisoned in postwar Japan enters the dark world of the yakuza, adopting their way of life in repayment for his freedom." You can really tell where his loyalties lie when he assaults an American man with a typewriter after he slandered Japan towards the end of the clip. Leto is known to play conflicted characters, so we can only assume what the character's next moves will be. However, it won't be a long wait. The Martin Zandvliet-directed film hits Netflix on March 9th.
