Issa Rae is having another incredible year. Fresh off her Emmy nomination and the immense success of the third season of her HBO show Insecure, Issa is set to take on the lead role an upcoming romantic comedy titled American Princess.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be produced by actor and screenwriter Paul Feig. Feig has championed female-centered comedies such as Bridesmaids and the hit Ghostbusters revival in the past. After actress Frances McDormand mentioned an inclusion rider requiring a set level of diversity amongst casting and production staff in her acceptance speech for the Best Actress award at this year's Oscars, Feig chose to adopt the policy at his company, Feigco Entertainment, less than two weeks later.
Feig will be joined by Jessie Henderson and Brendan O’Brien on the producer's team and Stella Meghie will direct the film. Mehgie, a Canadian director, is behind hit young adult film, Everything, Everything, starring Amandla Stenberg and Nick Robinson which took home over $60 million following its premiere.
American Princess will follow the story of an American woman, Issa's character, who upon moving to London, finds herself immersed in a world high society and wealth. She eventually finds love through unconventional means. Amy Aniobi, a writer who has worked with Rae as a writer/co-executive producer on Insecure wrote the script.
