The two have been documented facetiming and commenting on each other's Instagrams, yes, and have even appeared in photos together and wished one another happy birthday, but Halsey is not having any of the relationship rumours. She tweeted her disgust for the gendered way that the rumour mill operates, saying "I just had a ground breaking idea. What if...we let female artists...have friends...without assuming that they are sleeping together? I know I know. It’s like, completely ambitious but like, imagine if we like, tried ?"
The rumours began on Instagram where Halsey posted an Yves Saint Laurent lipstick ad that she featured in. John Mayer commented a joke on the photo: “It's saying that my billing address doesn't match with the one of my credit card? I've never had this problem before. Can you text me? Thanks." People took this to mean they're dating.
Apparently, the two have been friends for a while, but the friendship only became rumours of a relationship after Haley split with her erstwhile lover, the bleachy-haired, serious rapper G-Eazy.
