For reasons unknown, Future has found himself gravitating to a fantasy staple. Yet in some ways, he does feel like somewhat of a hip-hop wizard, solidifying himself as a powerful presence in a realm of players and footsoldiers. Few can deny his longevity, mystique, and ability to craft melodic bangers; while never hailed as an elite lyricist, many believe Future's pen game to be quietly nice, with welcome doses of emotional resonance hidden within the illusory haze. To make the transformation even more complete, the man recently dyed his hair a fair shade of "wizard gray." Today marks the arrival of Future's long-awaited The WIZRD, his first solo studio offering since 2017 brought the tandem of Future & HNDRXX.
Opting to keep this album a relatively solitary affair, Future enlists lone features from Gunna, Young Thug, and Travis Scott. True fans will likely find solace in the decidedly Future-centric narrative, especially given his recent run of candid interviews. Of course, like much of Future's recent output, the darkness surrounding his lifestyle remains a dominant theme, likewise for the accompanying feelings of isolation and vulnerability. It's likely that listeners will find much to discuss, should they dive in beyond a surface listen. Though this is, however, day one, and early reactions are bound to range; though a fan favorite to be sure, Future has proven a divisive figure in the past.
Where do you stand? Be sure to check out The WIZRD now, and let us know what tracks are immediate standouts. Or, should you feel like making a prediction, be sure to shot-call any possible deep cuts you think the masses might prematurely snooze on.
