Frank Ocean is as intensely private as he is revered musically. His last album, blonde, was as haunting as it was beautiful, constituting one of the most memorable long-form R&B memories from 2016. However, despite his success, it's not often that the public gets a glimpse inside the private life of the influential artist. That is, until last night, when some video footage of Ocean's 30th birthday party surfaced online. By the looks of it, the festivities were off the chain.
As per the clip that you can see below, Ocean made his big 30th birthday bash into a drag ball extraordinaire, with a giant crowd gathered in some of the most interesting costumes you'll see this Halloween. The evening's main event, complete with judges who awarded points to several contestants, featured Tyler, The Creator coming through and posing in a custom-made patterned suit, looking every bit the runway star that the night demanded. Ocean stole his own show though, sporting some glittering tights and some knee-high black boots over top of them. Just goes to show that, if you're hosting your own birthday party, it's always a good idea to make a statement with what you're wearing.
The theme of the party was undoubtedly inspired by the drag balls of years past, with a flavor that is reminiscent of the film Paris Is Burning. Centering around fashion-obsessed New Yorkers who created "voguing," a tradition that lives on in many gay communities the world over, the movie is as much about personal pride and expressing oneself as it is a historical look back at the Big Apple when it was in a transitional phase. You can peep a closer look at Frank Ocean's costume from that night below.
The singer recently scored another W when he recently defeated his father's $14.5 million defamation lawsuit. Ocean was sued by his dad after writing a Tumblr post that detailed the man's use of homophobic language when Ocean was a child. The exact quote that triggered the legal action reads as follows: "I was six years old when I heard my dad call our transgender waitress a faggot as he dragged me out a neighborhood diner saying we wouldn’t be served because she was dirty. That was the last afternoon I saw my father and the first time I heard that word, I think, although it wouldn’t shock me if it wasn’t."
One can only imagine how his father would have reacted watching the clips that have circulated from Frank's birthday bash.
