Drake is proving to be quite the creative force. The rapper has recently taken on the role of executive producer in the upcoming film, Monsters of Men.
The Reinaldo Marcus Green directed film depicts the sequence of events that unravel when a young Brooklyn father witnesses the shooting of an unarmed black man. The film's official synopsis reads, “When young father Manny witnesses the police shooting of an unarmed black man, the tight-knit community of Bed-Stuy is pushed to the brink in Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Sundance Award-winning portrait of race, family and consequence.”
The film's director was inspired after a conversation he had with a black police officer about the shooting of Eric Garner. Green described the conversation as unsettling, but insightful telling Entertainment Tonight, “Literally the hairs on my arm were standing up. It was really uncomfortable. “I didn’t see the police perspective, and I hadn’t seen that in a film…This is a different perspective. Whether I agreed or disagreed was sort of irrelevant; It was just necessary for me to hear it.” Of the film's perspective, Green shared, “We can turn on the TV and see the killings; I didn’t want to show that. I wanted to show a different side to what would be expected of a film like this.”
The film has been well received by critics and has earned an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The cast includes Anthony Ramos and BlackKklansman actor, John David Washington. Drake took to his Twitter to share the trailer writing, "I’m excited and honored to be a part of such an important film. I can’t wait for everyone to experience it."
