Childish Gambino's Government Ball set ended with on a bittersweet note Saturday night. "I'll see you for the last Gambino album," he said, before waving to the shocked crowd and leaving the stage.
Gambino, whose real name is Donald Glover, has recently taken on some acting gigs following the overwhelming critical success he earned with his FX show Atlanta. He's currently signed up to play Lando Calrissian in an upcoming Star Wars movie, voice Simba in a Lion King remake, and write a Deadpool animated series for FXX. While it seemed clear that music would be on the back burner for Glover over the next little while, the announcement confirmed that the Gambino era will be coming to a close.
Then again, even if the next Gambino project is the last, that doesn't necessarily mean Glover is done with writing and performing music. Whatever happens, it'll still likely be a while before we hear his next LP.
Always one to keep a close eye on internet humor, Gambino proved he was familiar with the recent "what Redbone sounds like" meme by giving the song an intro that began with a couple making out in a bathroom.
Glover also revealed that his son's name is Legend during the performance. He became a father last year.
Gambino released his "Awaken, My Love!" project last December. The lead single "Redbone" was certified platinum in May.
