DC Comics has been suffering at the movies. While films like Suicide Squad and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice made a ton of money at the box office, they were both divisive films that failed to garner the full respect of comic book fans. Wonder Woman was the only film in the DCEU that was a success both critically and commercially, but the upcoming Aquaman movie looks to change that.
Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa will play the underwater hero for the second time, after first appearing as Aquaman in Justice League. New York Comic Con is currently taking place, and DC rolled through with an epic new trailer for Aquaman. The five-minute trailer is a spectacle to behold, and it appears that director James Wan (Furious 7, Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring) is bringing his eye for immaculate visuals to the forefront.
Fans get to see an action-packed chase/fight scene between Aquaman, Mera (Amber Heard), and the arch-villain Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). Abdul-Mateen was enthralling in the first season of The Get Down, and his presence as Aquaman's nemesis, all while the hero's brother Ocean Master stirs up a war, will cause an interesting dynamic. It looks like Aquaman will be receiving the "Batman Villain Treatment," meaning the hero will be forced to battle two bad-guys at once (think every live-action Batman movie following the first one). Check out the extended trailer below and catch Aquaman when it hits theaters on December 21.
