Dreamville's EarthGang have been quietly killing it in 2017, having closed out the year with two stellar (and underrated) EPs, Robots and Rags. And while both projects are rather brief, together, they make up the larger part of a conceptual whole, as evidenced by the similar album art and underlying themes. Now, the duo have announced the latest chapter in the saga, continuing the trend of "R" alliteration with Royalty. And while that's already good news, it's made even better by the fact that we'll be getting it sooner than later, in January.
If you liked the previous two installments, Royalty will presumably continue the trend; in fact, the title suggests a sense of grandiosity that might make this chapter the most exciting one yet. If you haven't yet checked out EarthGang's music, you should get on that. Comparisons have been made to a younger Outkast, with a heavy focus on excellent Atlanta lyricism. Doctur Dot and Johnny Venus are at once clever, introspective, and powerful writers, and it seems as if they're only beginning to realize their potential. If you're a fan of early Kast, J Cole, Mick Jenkins, Underachievers or J.I.D., you should most definitely check out Rags, Robots, and come January, Royalty.
