Mila J has released an EP a month since January, and the prolific strategy has resulted in some of her best work to date. Her earliest projects in 2018 were made up primarily of stripped-down acoustic R&B and vulnerable break up songs. Now 5 projects deep into the series, things have opened up a lot more. On "That One Friend," a track from the newly released May 2018, is built on a minimal house beat that eventually melts into the sticky, harmony-laden R&B Mila does so well. It's the only track on the project that uses that formula. Elsewhere, she's back to the 90s-nodding R&B of past releases, but once again, her songwriting feels sharper than ever. She cleverly references Whodini's "Friends" on the hook, and on the verses, references "that one friend everybody's afraid to bring up," which sometimes, is herself.
Quotable Lyrics:
We all got that one friend
That everybody's afraid to bring up
Sometimes I'm that one friend
No you don't want me 'round
'Til it's time for shit to go down
I turn up 'cause I like to
If you mean I wanna fight you
