Indianapolis Colts assistant coach Robert Mathis was reportedly arrested early Tuesday morning and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
According to the initial report by TMZ Sports, Mathis, the Colts' former All-Pro defensive end, was pulled over after an officer spotted him driving the wrong way on a one-way street around 12:09 AM and noticed he wasn't using his turn signals. The report states that the officer noticed signs Mathis was impaired and then arrested him for OWI: Endangering a Person.
The 13-year NFL vet was booked at Hamilton County Jail and was released this morning without bail after spending about nine hours in jail.
Despite the initial reports, new details have emerged, including the fact that Mathis blew a .052 which is well below the legal limit of .08.
Per TMZ Sports,
"We're told cops conducted a field sobriety test -- Mathis didn't do well -- and officers ultimately determined Mathis was impaired and unable to drive."
"FYI, the law allows officers to arrest someone for OWI based on other tests besides B.A.C.. That seems to be what happened in this case."
Mathis, 36, retired from playing following the 2016 season and is the Indianapolis Colts' pass-rush consultant. He was drafted by the Colts in 2003 out of Alabama A&M and spent all 13 seasons, including five Pro Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl championship, with the team. He is the Colts' all-time leader in sacks and ranks 17th on the NFL's all-time list with 123.
The Colts have not yet issued a statement regarding the incident. The team is coming off a 27-0 beat down at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars, which has them sitting at 2-5 on the season. With their franchise quarterback Andrew Luck sidelined due to soreness in his surgically repaired throwing shoulder the Colts have little hope.
According to NFL.com, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on NFL GameDay Morning on Sunday that Luck won't practice this week. Last week, Colts general manager Chris Ballard didn't offer a timeline as to when Luck might return to practice.
In Week 8, Indianapolis will take on the 2-4 Bengals in Cincinnati.
