Atlanta's airport outage over the weekend put quite a dent in many holiday travel plans. Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport lost power shortly after 1:00 PM yesterday, leaving hundreds of passengers trapped in terminals while some were sitting in aeroplanes on the tarmac.
FlightAware reports that 1,173 flights were cancelled and 207 were delayed. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed stated that a fire at the main substation that powered the airport sparked the outage.
"I want to express my sincere apologies to the thousands of passengers whose day has been disrupted in this manner," Kasim said, via NBC News. "We certainly understand that the outage has caused frustration and anger and we are doing everything that we can to get folks back home right away."
By 7:32 PM the power had been restored at certain concourses throughout the airport and by 11:55 PM all power was back on.
Delta Airlines, that stated over 900 of its flights were cancelled, said that a waiver would be issued to passengers travelling through Atlanta on December 17th, 18th or 19th.
