The film has kept its staggering momentum since its December 2017 release.

This Martin Luther King Day weekend, Sony's runaway hit Jumanji topped the box office once again, raking in an impressive $35.4 million dollars. Its domestic total will amass to $291.6 million since its initial debut 29 days ago, earning the spot as the eighth highest grossing film released last year. So far, the film has ruled the first two weekends of 2018, and has significantly outperformed most projections, especially since it debuted just after Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which has been losing momentum.

According to Variety, this holiday weekend box office gross is up a cool $10 during the same time period last year, which can solely be attributed to the unstoppable force that is Jumanji

The film outgrossed the Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep vehicle The Post, which debuted at number 2 with $23.4 million in ticket sales, while the weekend's most notable wide release, The Commuter starring Liam Neeson, assumed the third spot with a respectable $16.4 million. The weekends other two new releases, Proud Mary and Paddington 2, started off their box office run in the lower tier of the top 10, debuting in the sixth and eighth position on this week's box office chart.

Variety also anticipates that Jumanji may be able to out-earn this week's upcoming releases, which sees Chris Hemsworth star in the war drama 12 Strong, and the Gerard Butler and 50 Cent-led heist film Den of Thieves.
