Rappers always put on for their cities, so it's not uncommon for a rapper's hometown to show them love back. It's not unusual for a rapper to be awarded with the key to their city, but UK grime rapper Skepta might have all of them beat.
Yesterday, the Boy Better Know head honcho was granted an honorary chieftaincy title in his parents' home state of Ogun, Nigeria.
According to the BBC, Skepta was officially granted the title of "Amuludun of Odo Aje," which translates to "Chief Entertainer of Odo Aje."
The title is typically given to those have provided a positive contribution to the community, and Skepta is a perfect candidate. Skepta has always paid respects to his Nigerian roots, frequently going there to play shows, as well as releasing Nigerian-themed merchandise, anf this was Nigeria's way of showing him love back. He isn't the first celebrity to be awarded with a cheiftaincy, but he's the first rapper and arguably the most famous celebrity to receive the honor.
Skepta posted a video of his award ceremony and wrote the following, "Thank you to the Baale, Chiefs of Odo Aje and King for presenting me with my Chieftaincy title today. I am honoured and will continue to put time and love into Nigeria, especially the community of Odo Aje."
Supermodel Naomi Campbell, who has also been seen with Skepta in Nigeria, took the time to congratulate the new Chief on Twitter.
Congratulations to Chief Skepta. Check out some more footage from the award ceremony below.
