On Monday night, the rematch of last season's Divisional Round playoff game went down in Seattle as the Seahawks hosted Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons in a battle of NFC titans. Atlanta got an ideal start to the game going up 14-0 right away, but Russell Wilson would battle back throughout the game and give his chance to tie the game with just seconds left, but Seahawks kicker Blair Walsh missed a 52-yard FG to extend the game.
The Falcons had a chance to the cut the lead 24-21 before the half with a FG, but instead coach Pete Carroll opted for a fake FG and it was snubbed out, which would ultimately come back to haunt them in the end. However, Carroll isn’t back down from his decision to go for it.
“It would have been a really good call if we would have made it,” Carroll said. “It was a terrific opportunity, right where we wanted it. The defensive tackle made a better play. He wasn’t supposed to be there.”
With the Seahawks defense depleted due to injuries, the Falcons would go onto put up the most points they’ve had all year long for their offense. Matt Ryan completed 19 of 27 passes for 195 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions while leading the Falcons to five scores on eight possessions (excluding kneel downs). Falcons RB Tevin Coleman would get 20 carries for 43 yards and 1 touchdown.
As for the Seahawks, Russell Wilson put the entire offense on his back and threw for 252 yards and 2 touchdowns, while throwing for 1 interception. However, Russ also had to comeback with his feet as the Seahawks were struggling to find any run game. Wilson rushed for 86 yards and 1 touchdown in total, making him have quiet the fantasy score for those who have him. TE Jimmy Graham brought in 7 catches for 58 yards and 1 touchdown, while Doug Baldwin also had 40 yards and a late 4th quarter touchdownwn to make it a close game.
Unfortunately, the Seahawks fell short on the leg of kicker Blair Walsh who missed a game tying FG with :07 seconds left in the game. The victory now pushes Atlanta into the No. 6 spot in the playoff picture, knocking Seattle into the "in the hunt" category in the process.
Next week, the Falcons host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while the Seahawks head to San Francisco to take on the 49ers.
