Mhlengi Gwala is a South African triathlete renowned for his dextrous pair of legs that have significantly bolstered his abilities. However, a trio of jealous lunatics prefer that Gwala be stripped of his considerable skills, and attempted to gruesomely end his career.
The athlete's training partner Sandile Shange has told the BBC that Gwala had been involved in a potentially-fatal attack involving a chainsaw and an attempt at amputating his prized set of limbs.
The attack reportedly commenced in the early hours of Tuesday morning while Gwala partook in a training ride in Durban. A gaggle of men caused the triathlete to go off course, taking him into a set of bushes to try and cut off both legs. He was luckily able to escape his attackers with non-life threatning sever wounds, as the chainsaw's teeth weren't sharp enough to cause serious abrasion to his bones.
Police spokesman Nqobile Gwala reveals how "he thought they were coming to rob him, stopped and gave them his phone but they didn't want his phone, didn't want his watch or bicycle. They dragged him to the side of the road to some bushes, took a saw and started cutting his legs. They kept on cutting and when they got to the bone, because the saw was not that sharp, the saw got stuck. When they saw it was getting stuck they started on the other leg."
The incident is being investigated as a case of attempted murder by local authorities. Gwala is expected to make a full recovery, but will take months of rehabilitation and physical therapy in order to gain back the strength and mobility he once possessed.
Gwala was expected to compete in the South African national championships later this month.
