He was 83.

According to the California Department of Corrections, Charles Manson, the leader of the cult responsible for the infamous Tate-LaBianca killings of 1969 in Los Angeles, has passed away of natural causes at the age of 83. It was earlier this month that Manson was transported from Corcoran State Prison to a hospital in Bakersfield, California for an undisclosed medical issue.

It was a two-day killing spree in August of 1969 masterminded by Manson that resulted in the deaths of seven people. According to reports, the murders were the result of Manson's interpretation of the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" track, believing the song to point toward a forthcoming apocalyptic race war.

In an effort to catalyze this war, Manson ordered members of his "Family" to arrive at a home in Los Angeles and "totally destroy everyone." The victims were 26-year old actress Sharon Tate, then the eight-and-a-half-month pregnant wife of director Roman Polanski, 35-year old celebrity hairstylist Jay Sebring, 32-year old screenwriter Voytek Frykowski, 25-year old Folger's coffee heiress Abigail Folger, and bystander Steven Earl Parent, 18. The following night, grocery store owner Leno Labianca and his wife Rosemary were stabbed to death in their Waverly Drive home.

Manson, along with Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Leslie Van Houten, would later be found guilty of the murders and received death sentences that would be commuted to life in prison.
