Donald Glover, who took home an Emmy earlier this year for his acting work on FX's hit comedy Atlanta, has put out an interesting casting call for anyone who's hoping to score a bit of screen time in Season Two.
According to Atlanta Magazine, the talented rapper and comedian has already begun filming the show's second season, but the production crew is looking for some extras who are in and around the ATL area. The directions have been posted on the official Atlanta website and includes requests for “very tan caucasians to portray Floridians,” and a “sketchy mom cheering on someone getting beat up.” If you think you fit either of those bills (or maybe both...), feel free to get your sign-up on. Who knows? You might just be on TV one day. The show's blend of biting social commentary and out-there absurdist humor has earned it a devoted fan following and near-universal praise from critics and executives in the TV industry. In fact, it was renewed for a second season just a few weeks after debuting its first episode.
Becoming the first black man in over 30 years to win a Best Actor Emmy is no small feat, putting Gambino in the company of famed actor Robert Guillaume, who accomplished the same feat in 1985. Glover as also won two Golden Globes, a NAACP award, a Critics Choice award over the past year. Upon accepting his Emmy, he had someone special to thank: his mentor Hiro Mai. "He taught me everything about directing," he said of his friend. "He had the eye for this show and he's just amazing. I really want to give this to Hiro and just say 'I love you and thank you for being my best friend.'"
There's no word on when Season 2 of Atlanta will debut, but odds are we're going to be waiting a while, certainly until next year, so see any of the finished product. However, cast member Lakeith Stanfield says that he has no doubt the show's content will once again be topical. "I’m sure the current events going on will influence the writers to put something in there," he said. "I think they’ve written it, but I haven’t seen anything yet, but I’ve been hearing some interesting things."
