The Who Run It has seen its share of eye-opening entries. Many of the rappers who have participated don't even trace the song's point of origin. But I digress, the song's original writers are fully behind the movement. It'll be interesting to see if any of the freestyles engender a breakthrough for a lesser-known artists. Several decades ago, Ice Cube made a habit of jacking other rapper's beats. The impulse to upstage the competition is something borne out of a competition for spots. Cuban Doll and G Gotti's version of the Three-Six classic makes an "I for one" mentality excusable.
G Gotti's street sensibility enmeshes well with the aggressive feel of the "Who Run It" beat. As with her celebrated cover of Kodak's "Transportin'," Cuban Doll is pitching her resume on other rapper's beat selection. Working with the elite is a privilege bestowed upon a select few. The "Who Run It" challenge is therefore solid foreshadowing for up comers who are priced out of the conversation. How does "I Run It" rank among the many iterations of this record? Comment below.
Quotable Lyrics:
These hoes be mad 'cause we up
As far as n***** be mad, they can't keep us
B**** I ball like D1
Weak b**** I'd never be one
Sneak diss 'cause they can't keep up
