The NFL's all-time leader in combined kickoff and punt return touchdowns, Devin Hester, has officially announced his retirement from the league today. Hester, 35, played for the Baltimore Ravens and Seattle Seahawks last season but was not on an NFL roster this year.
He finishes his career with 14 punt returns for touchdowns, the most in NFL history, five kickoff return TDs, and one touchdown return of a missed field goal. Among his most memorable returns was the opening kickoff of Super Bowl XLI against the Indianapolis Colts, which he took 92 yards to the house, giving Chicago a 7-0 lead.
The Bears selected Hester in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft, and he spent his first eight seasons with the team before moving on to Atlanta for a couple of seasons.
He announced his retirement on social media today with a lengthy statement that starts off with,
"I have good news and bad news," he said in a statement.
"Good news: Commissioner Goodell, you can put the kickoff back at the 30. Bad news: Y'all will have to find a new favorite returner."
