The Utah Jazz acquired Derrick Rose and Jae Crowder at yesterday's trade deadline as part of a three-team deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Sacramento Kings. However, it doesn't appear as though the Jazz intend to keep Rose on the roster.
According to several reports, the Jazz will waive the 29-year old former MVP, allowing him to pursue another opportunity with a playoff team. The Jazz, having won eight of their last 10, are 26-28 on the season which is 10th in the Western Conference.
Once Rose is officially free to sign with a team of his choosing, it is expected that the Minnesota Timberwolves will look to add him to their roster, according to Marc Stein among others. Rose played for Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau from 2010 to 2015 with the Chicago Bulls, which includes the season (2010-11) that Rose won NBA MVP. Minnesota also has some of Rose's former Bulls teammates from the Thibodeau era, including Jimmy Butler and Taj Gibson.
In just 16 games with the Cavs this season, Rose is averaging just 9.8 points per game in a little over 19 minutes of action per night.
The Timberwolves are currently sitting in fourth place in the Western Conference with a mark of 34-23, just 1.5 games back of the third place San Antonio Spurs.
