Black Panther lands a major milestone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As you're probably well aware, Marvel's Black Panther has been making waves of late, with many citing the film as "revolutionary." While some may be quick to brush off the claims as hyperbole, the film remains one of, if not the, biggest blockbusters to feature a predominantly black cast. In today's climate, that's a meaningful feat, and Black Panther packs a social relevance previously unseen by other installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Therefore, it's no surprise that Marvel's upcoming film was the center of TIME magazine's latest cover story, a first in MCU history.

Throughout the extensive and passionate piece by Jamil Smith, the cultural significance of Black Panther is analyzed in depth. "It’s a movie about what it means to be black in both America and Africa—and, more broadly, in the world," writes Smith. "Rather than dodge complicated themes about race and identity, the film grapples head-on with the issues affecting modern-day black life. It is also incredibly entertaining, filled with timely comedy, sharply choreographed action and gorgeously lit people of all colors."

The piece goes on to touch upon the current state of Hollywood, as well as the changing tide. "Black Panther is poised to prove to Hollywood that African-American narratives have the power to generate profits from all audiences. And, more important, that making movies about black lives is part of showing that they matter." For a more extensive look on the cultural importance of Black Panther, check out the full story here
