Twitter Reacts to Game 1 of WNBA Finals

This weekend in sports has been an exciting one with most of the talk having to do less with actual playing.

Nonetheless, the world’s top athletes have continued to deliver impeccable performances with one of the more thrilling matchups flying under the radar. The match in question, of course, is that of the Game 1 faceoff between the Minnesota Lynx and Los Angeles Sparks as the WNBA Finals got underway on Sunday.

Falling in line with the general theme of the day, the match kicked off with both the Lynx and Sparks taking a stand against President Donald trump’s remarks on NFL players who kneel during the national anthem, calling on owners to fire “the sons of bitches,” and urging fans to turn off and walk out on games where this form of protest is displayed. For the Lynx this meant linking arms during the national anthem while the Sparks made the decision to leave the arena altogether during the presentation, returning shortly after it ended.

“We all have watched television today and our social media feeds and we know this is an interesting time in our country,” WNBA president Lisa Borders told reporters in a pregame press conference. “Let me just say our Commissioner, my colleague and my friend Adam Silver put out a statement yesterday and I want you all to know that I personally believe all of us stand in full support with Adam, our big brother – the NBA – and our entire enterprise.”

As for the match itself, it was nothing short of enthralling, as is the norm whenever these two squads face off on the hardwood. In a game that kept onlookers on the edge of their seats from start to finish, the Sparks just barely edged out a victory of 85-84 over the Lynx after point guard Chelsea Gray hit a game-winning jump shot with only two seconds left on the clock.

“Adrenaline was just running through me,” Gray said. “I’m just happy we got the win.”

Last year the Sparks took home the ultimate victory in a five-game series against the Lynx, securing their first title since 2002 and their third in franchise history with two of the games coming down to a buzzer-beating basket.
