After revealing that we'd finally be blessed with the long-awaited second season of Atlanta this spring, brothers Donald and Stephen Glover have gone onto unveil a bit more about the premise of their sophomore outing.
"We talked a lot about ‘How I Spent My Summer Vacation,’ the Tiny Toons, which was a show we all really liked,” Donald Glover noted during a press tour on Friday, January 5. “That was the inspiration for season 2.”
The series to which the elder Glover is referring is the Tiny Toon Adventures animated comedy from the 1990s in which younger versions of the Looney Tunes characters attended Acme Looniversity. Specifically, "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" was a film with several episodes that followed around the characters during summer vacation.
"The episodes were broken up in eight or nine episodes, but you watched them all together and they were a movie and they would play them during the summer together or in installments,” explained writer Stephen Glover. “We took that idea of a whole story, but being told in a bunch of little parts that will be shown that maybe seem like they’re their own thing, but they all are one thing.”
“You enjoy them more when they’re together, but you can also enjoy them in little bits," added Donald.
They also went on to expound on the Atlanta Robbin' Season title, deriving from the setting as the series picks up at a time just before the Christmas season gets into full gear in the title city.
“It’s a very dangerous, uncertain time in the city. So everybody’s shaken up a little bit this year, and everybody has to make important decisions,” Stephen says. “‘Robbin’ Season’ is kind of like a metaphor for all of our characters.”
The second season of Atlanta will make its official debut Thursday, March 1 at 10 p.m. ET on FX (no matter what LaKeith Stanfield says).
