Last week, the industry and internet alike were sent into a frenzy following Meek Mill’s sentencing of 2-4 years in prison following multiple probation violations. In its wake came an outpouring of support from heavy-hitters throughout Hip-Hop and its community if fans after the likes of JAY-Z and Rick Ross extended their criticism of what they perceive t be harsh sentencing.
A “Justice For Meek” petition was also started and addressed to Pennsylvania’s Governor Tom Wolf in an effort to have Meek’s sentence reduced or pardoned. Nonetheless, it seems that the fight for justice is only just getting started as a rally has now been organized in support of the Philadelphia-bred rapper in his hometown in the city’s Criminal Justice Center on Monday, November 13th at 5 PM.
Meek’s recent sentencing stems from a decade-old case in which a then 19-year old Meek Mill caught a conviction on gun and drug charges. Since that conviction, Meek has violated his probation at least three times in the last two years. Earlier in the year, he was hit with a reckless driving charge after getting caught popping wheelies on his dirt bike in New York. The charge was dropped on the condition that he stay out of trouble for the next six months. He also faced an assault charge after being part of an airport scuffle in St. Louis—a charge that was also later dropped.
All the while, the fact that his probation was violated in the first place still stands, leading to his eventual sentencing last week. Since his sentencing, reports have surfaced with Meek’s lawyer alleging that the judge presiding over the case was biased in her treatment because of a past encounter in which Meek Mill refused to leave Roc Nation to join her colleague’s management company.
