Saturday night, Daniel Jacobs stepped into the ring hoping to pull out a knockout win over his opponent Luis Arias. While the result wasn’t exactly how he planned, he did relay the ultimate message that he was back. Going through all twelve rounds, a unanimous decision—120-107, 119-108, 118-109—is what handed the victory over to Jacobs by the night’s end.
While he did nab a knockdown in the 11th round, Jacobs would have to settle for the win in another fashion. “I was trying to go for the knockout, but I’ve been out nine months and I was a little rusty,” Jacobs said. “He was a crafty guy. Much respect to his team.”
The evening signaled Jacobs’ (33-2, 29 KOs) first matchup since losing a close decision to Gennady Golovkin in March of this year, marking the second defeat of his career. As for Arias (18-1, 9 Kos), this came as his first loss in 19 fights. “I wanted to impress the fans and put on a good show,” Jacobs went on to add. “I got a little aggressive. I hurt him early. Then, once I knew I could hurt him, I got a little bit more aggressive.”
