A fan who opted for the VIP treatment at Chance The Rapper's Magnificent Coloring Day Festival in Chicago is suing concert promoters for injuries she experienced backstage at the show. According to a report from TMZ, the unnamed woman claims she was on her way backstage for a VIP Meet & Greet when she tripped on an unsecured chain on the floor of the tunnel. She says she was "slammed to the ground" and injured, but further details have not been provided.
It's AEG Live, the concert promoter, rather than Chance, who the plaintiff is holding accountable for damages, stating that the company has a responsibility to keep the grounds safe. The amount she is seeking has not been included.
Chance was recently sued for copyright infringement over "Windows," a song from his 2012 mixtape 10 Day. New York lawyer and jazz musician named Abdul Wali Muhammad says that "Windows" is a "blatant and willful infringement" of the copyrighted song "Bridge Through Time." He's made a request to a judge to order Chance to stop "copying, distributing, performing, selling or offering to sell" the song. Seeing that the song was released for free and has never been for sale (outside of an unofficial stream on Apple Music which has since been taken down at Chance's request), the case is unconventional, but not the first of its kind. Mac Miller settled a $10 million lawsuit with Lord Finesse over "Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza," a song from his free K.I.D.S. mixtape that sampled the rapper and producer.
While his name has now come up in a couple of lawsuits, Chance has kept up his work as a philanthropist. Earlier this month, Chance announced that he had successfully raised $2.2 million for 20 Chicago schools. "Every contribution...brings this city and this nation closer to providing a well-rounded quality education for each and every child," he said. "Funding quality education for public [school] students is the most important investment a community can make." Chance was awarded the Humanitarian award at the 2017 BET Awards by none other than Michelle Obama. "With these passionate efforts, chance is showing our young people that they matter," the former First Lady said."Because of you, countless young people will grow up believing in themselves."
