Kodak Black is certainly a controversial figure in hip hop. Since breaking into the game, his legal issues and overall lifestyle has been on display for public viewing. While he's still young and has more growing up to do, it's safe to say that his music isn't necessarily appropriate for young children. His music is raw, gritty, truthful and details a life that most parents want to shelter their children from. However, a music teacher at Bethune Middle School in Dekalb County recently assigned some Kodak Black lyrics as homework to his students and the result of that did not work in his favor.
A middle school teacher in Georgia recently assigned his students the lyrics to Kodak Black's verse on "Drowning" as homework. The teacher wanted his students to take the explicit lyrics from Kodak's verse and turn them into something positive. The assignment drew backlash from many parents.
A student's mother, Crishana Wright, spoke to local TV network WSB-TV about the assignment. She said it went against everything she tries to teach her children.
"I'm like reading all these words and I immediately asked her [daughter], 'why do you have this?' and she said there was an assignment," Wright said.
Her daughter even said that she knew her mother would be mad after she was given the assignment.
Wright's mother also told the news station that she really didn't understand the purpose of the assignment.
"I really don't see how you can make that positive but to say don’t do it," she said.
The teacher has been suspended for his poor judgment and the superintendent of the school district has made a statement about the incident.
“The assignment was inappropriate, unacceptable and contrary to our standards. The employee responsible has been removed from the classroom and will be held accountable for such poor judgment. While we encourage teacher creativity, the expectation is that the instruction is always standards-based and age appropriate.” the statement read.
It's kind of hard to believe that a teacher actually thought this assignment through before giving it to his students. With the backlash it has received, it's hard to tell what will end up happening to the teacher's career at the school.
