Donald Trump's abrasive demeanor as President of the United States was on full display at the United Nations on Tuesday, when he took aim at the North Korea's feared ruler, Kim Jong Un. As per the report from The New York Times, Trump made his stance crystal clear to all those watching, both in the general assembly room and around the world via Internet streaming, when he vowed that the United States would “totally destroy North Korea” if the country felt threatened in any way. He also bad-mouthed the nuclear agreement with Iran, calling it “an embarrassment” that he may soon leave behind.
“As president of the United States, I will always put America first, just like you," he said in his speech. "[The] leaders of your countrie, will always and should always put your countries first.” That statement generated smatterings of applause throughout the chamber, but those good vibes were quickly exhausted when Trump began to argue that nationalism can be the first step in the joining of common causes between strong nations. The President also promised to “crush loser terrorists,” mocked North Korea’s leader by calling him “Rocket Man” and declared that certain parts of the world “are going to hell.” While some may applaud his "honesty," those statements were largely met with silence from the other dignitaries present.
“If the righteous many do not confront the wicked few, then evil will triumph,” he said. “When decent people and nations become bystanders to history, the forces of destruction only gather power and strength.” He continued on this train of thought by continuing to bash North Korea's government not only for their questionable nuclear testing activity, but for their treatment of their own citizens and visitors from other countries. “No nation on Earth has an interest in seeing this band of criminals arm itself with nuclear weapons and missiles,” Trump continued. “The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea. Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime.”
It's worth noting that North Korea's ambassador to the UN, Ja Song Nam, left his seat before Trump's arrival.
