The United States Men's National Soccer failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since the 1986 tournament. Last night's 2-1 loss to Trinidad & Tobago, coupled with other World Cup Qualifying results last night, resulted in an early elimination before the World Cup even began, which US defender Omar Gonazalez dubbed, "the worst day of my career."
"I just want to say sorry to the fans, all the U.S. fans that were pulling for us, that wanted to go to Russia, that believed in us," Gonzalez added, per ESPN. "We let down an entire nation today."
Trinidad & Tobago's first goal of the game came off the shin of Gonzalez, who was attempting to clear a cross sent into the box in the 17th minute.
"It's one of the most unlucky goals ever I think for myself," Gonzalez said, per ESPN. "It's one that will haunt me forever."
20 minutes after the own goal, Trinidad & Tobago's Alvin Jones buried a 30-yarder which turned out to be all they would need to prevent the U.S. from qualifying for the World Cup.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup will be held in Russia next year, beginning on June 14th and running through July 15th. Unfortunately the United States won't be invited.
