At a time where freestyles aren't quite as popular as they once were, Tay-K's "The Race" emerged as the most popular instrumental to get some bars off on in 2017. Lil Wayne, who more than anyone, has made going in over popular instrumentals a sport, has finally joined the competition, turning in his remix of "The Race" on his newly released Dedication 6: Reloaded. Rather than coming with unabashed tough talk like Tay-K and many of the other remixers, Wayne has turned the song into an auto-tuned ode to his main girl.
It's a reminder that as much as Wayne has been known for delivering punchline after punchline on his mixtapes, he'll also transform a song into something entirely new if he feels like it. On "Main Things," he finds the melodic pockets of the beat previously unexplored. At the same time, he's still dropping lines that'll have you pulling the *thinking face emoji* ("She like to keep the doors up, they look like referees"), until they click and you have to rewind to relive them.
