Last week Twitter revealed they were testing out a longer character limit for users to further express themselves. After consideration and individual trials, they have finally rolled out the new feature, making 280 characters the new limit from the previous 140.
All languages are now able to tweet their hearts out with the exception of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese since Twitter argues that these languages can convey more in fewer characters.
"Historically, 9% of Tweets in English hit the character limit. This reflects the challenge of fitting a thought into a Tweet, often resulting in lots of time spent editing and even at times abandoning Tweets before sending," the official Twitter blog writes. "With the expanded character count, this problem was massively reduced – that number dropped to only 1% of Tweets running up against the limit. Since we saw Tweets hit the character limit less often, we believe people spent less time editing their Tweets in the composer. This shows that more space makes it easier for people to fit thoughts in a Tweet, so they could say what they want to say, and send Tweets faster than before"
You'll also notice that the countdown to your limit of text has now changed to a circle that indicates the space that you have left to occupy.
Twitter revealed that those who tested the trail before it went live, said the new character limit made them feel more satisfied with the platform and "how they expressed themselves." Overall the users said they received more engagement such as likes, retweets and followers. Check out some the reactions so far, a lot of users are left wondering when the edit button will be coming next.
