Former MLB Pitcher Roy Halladay Dies In Plane Crash

Former MLB star pitcher Roy Halladay has passed away after being involved in a plane crash in the Gulf of Mexico, according to several media outlets. Halladay was 40 years old.

Halladay became a pilot after he retired from baseball after the 2013 season, and his plane- described by the sheriff's office as an ICON A5 light sport aircraft - went down 10 miles west of St. Petersburg around 1 pm, according to the New York Daily News.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of this amazing and generous individual. Our hearts go out to Roy and his family," the Pasco Sheriff said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

"We are numb over the very tragic news about Roy Halladay's untimely death," the Phillies said in a statement. "There are no words to describe the sadness that the entire Phillies family is feeling over the loss of one of the most respected human beings to ever play the game. It is with the heaviest of hearts that we pass along our condolences to Brandy, Ryan and Braden."

Over the course of his 16-year MLB career with the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies, Halladay notched 203 wins with a career ERA of 3.38. He was named to eight All-Star teams and won two Cy Young awards, one while he was with the Blue Jays in 2003, and another with the Phillies in 2010.

Halladay is survived by his wife Brandy and their two sons, Ryan and Braden. Former teammates, players around the league and others who knew him best continue to express their sorrow after learning of today's tragic news.
