Music group BTS also topped some of Twitter's popularity metrics.

2017 has been a year where many people, both in the United States and abroad, have used Twitter as a means to air their grievances about a number of social issues. Politics, violent acts of terrorism and sexual assault have all been on the radar in what can safely be pegged as a world-weary 12 months for the social media platform. However, according to Fader, the year's most popular tweet is one that spreads a message of love, tolerance and, ultimately, hope.

Posted by former President of the United States Barack Obama, the above response to the violence that occurred in Charlottsville, Virginia, as a result of a White Nationalist protest gone awry, is the most liked tweet of the year, as well as the one with the second-most retweets. The message reads as follows: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion…" Unsurprisingly, the tweet is also the most liked in the history of the social media site.

Ariana Grande's heartfelt response to the Manchester bombing attack that took place outside a venue that she was performing at came in as the second most-liked tweet of the year, while Barack Obama's supportive post for John McCain rounded out the Top 3. Elsewhere, K-Pop group BTS were the most tweeted-about celebrities in the music business, in terms of U.S.-based statistics. Nicki Minaj and Chance the Rapper also managed to crack the Top 5 for musicians. Check out the entire list below.
