Free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been named one of the ten finalists for TIME's 2017 Person of the Year award, along with President Trump, Jeff Bezos, the #MeToo Movement and others.
Each year, the magazine aims to select "the person or group of people who most influenced the news during the past year, for better or for worse."
Kaepernick has already been named GQ Magazine's "Citizen of the Year" for his efforts off the field and he'll be the recipient of Sports Illustrated's Muhammad Ali Legacy Award tomorrow night in New York.
He has not played in the NFL at all this season but the protests he started a season ago raised awareness and started the conversation about how we can achieve social reform. As a result of the protests during the national anthem, the NFL recently proposed partnering with its players to effect social justice change, and the league has submitted a proposal that would donate nearly $100 million to causes considered important to African-American communities.
In addition to Kaepernick, Trump, Jeff Bezos and the #MeToo movement, TIME also unveiled North Korea's Kim Jong Un, President of China Xi Jinping, Saudi Arabia's crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman, former FBI director Robert Mueller, writer/director Patty Jenkins, and The Dreamers as finalists for the annual "Person of the Year" award.
TIME will reportedly announce the 2017 "Person of the Year" on Wednesday, December 6th.
