Post Malone and 21 Savage's hazy single "Rockstar" continues to make noise, and now, the single has achieved a new milestone. As evidenced by a post shared by Elliot Wilson, Post and 21's single is officially 2017's longest running hip-hop #1 on the Hot 100 charts. Considering the song only dropped in September, that's actually pretty crazy. According to a report from Billboard, Post and 21 have already spent four weeks at number one, surpassing closest competitors Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow," Kendrick Lamar's "Humble," Migos & Lil Uzi Vert's "Bad & Boujee," and DJ Khaled, Lil Wayne, Quavo, Chance The Rapper and Justin Bieber's "I'm The One."
Before "Rockstar," Rae Sremmurd and Gucci Mane held the longest running hip-hop #1 with "Black Beatles," which sat at the top for seven weeks in November 2016. It's a good look for Post and 21 Savage; can anybody honestly have guessed the Savage Mode rapper would be on one of the year's most radio-friendly songs? Congratulations are most definitely in order. However, there are some who might accuse the record labels of gaming the system, as "Rockstar" was actually at the center of a recent streaming controversy, which led to some believing that Post's ascent to the top wasn't as genuine as it may appear. Regardless, the song is a banger, and the perfect blend of rapping and melody makes it well-suited for radio. In truth, it's a little musically darker than the traditional hit, with a minor, melancholic chord progression and a somewhat haunting melody. Perhaps that differentiation has helped catapult it to the top. Regardless of how you feel about Post's music, it's hard to be mad at a hip-hop song dominating the charts, and further solidifying itself as the most important musical genre in the game.
