Onyx live up to the Pokémon that bears their name, dropping music that's at once hard and tinged with rock influence. Case in point, lead single "Ima Fuckin Rockstar" pretty much smashes the nail on the head with a sledgehammer. Sticky Fingaz and Fredro Starr are not exactly the picture of subtlety, although the former did deliver a nuanced concept album called Black Trash: The Autobiography Of Kirk Jones back in 2001. Their work with Onyx is more concerned with unleashing aggression, bringing out hard flowers over raucous production.
It's not going to be to everyone's liking, especially those more wary of a vintage sound. Yet Onyx has always been an unapologetic force and that hasn't changed. The production feels like something from the acid rock era, with overdriven, fuzz-laden guitars and brash, hard-hitting drums; no trap percussion in sight.
