J. Cole explains his approach to his new single, "Miss America," and says his January 28th release date for "Born Sinner" is "ambitious."

J. Cole got fans pumped with his lead single from his sophomore effort, Born Sinner

"Miss America" wasn't your typical radio-friendly single, and J. Cole spoke on this while at the red carpet on the AMAs.

Talking to Billboard, (via HHNM), he explains how he wants to "shift" culture, even just a little, with his track.

"We have like a responsibility and a certain power that comes with making the music and playing the music. And that comes with a responsibility to keep things fresh and not to fall into the mode of what’s traditional. I have singles that fall into that, but if I can use my power in some kind of way I’m gonna try to use it to shift culture just a little bit. And to me “Miss America” shifts things a little bit, it changes the conversation it takes it in a more aggressive direction, more raw, more social commentary. Any type of commentary is good compared to what a normal single is these days. That’s my aim is to shift culture slightly, change the conversation….nobody expects that for your first single," J. Cole explained of the record.

Good news then followed bad, as J. Cole revealed he plans on shooting a short film to go with his LP, however, Born Sinner may be delayed from its January 28th date.  "In a perfect world I shoot for January 28th, but even when I released that, honestly I knew that was very far-fetched, very ambitious," he said, "there are certain things I wanna do promotion-wise, like we're shooting a short film, there's certain branding opportunities I wanna do with this, that I didn't get to do on the last one." He explained, "A short film, something way more expansive than a music video, shooting that in December."
