North Carolina rapper mikey100k has a small but promising catalogue to his name. Sharing his music on SoundCloud, he's managed to build a following on the platform through his mesmerizing, melodically-inclined tracks that almost play like looped hooks, finding a pocket and sticking deep within it. On "Family Ties," Mikey demonstrates this quality as he builds a chorus that's as catchy as it is emotionally potent. He sits on that melody for much of the record, and it only becomes stronger as it returns. "Told my momma / Fuck them bills / Don't let it stress her / I just put my faith in God he gon' protect us," he raps defiantly, but there's a certain comfort to be found in his tone. That calming effect is found across his tracks, which he tags as #CozyRap.
As well as "Family Ties," which arrives along with a video, mikey dropped a 3-song EP called Red Flowers this week. You can stream it here.
Quotable Lyrics:
They just want me to fall
But I just want it all
Want my n***as to ball
Now that they see that I'm on
I don't answer they calls
'Cause I know what they want
