Some of the best tracks on RJ's underrated 2017 album Mr. LA were produced by longtime collaborator DJ Mustard. On The Ghetto, the follow-up released Friday, Mustard is very much on the beat for all 11 tracks. "Hard Way" is a highlight from the project, bringing in the talents of Tupelo, Mississippi brothers Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi, better known as Rae Sremmmurd. As has been a popular sound over the last year, Mustard has a flute sample dance over his signature drums and characteristically chunky bassline. As they proved on "Set The Roof," Sremm are experts at navigating the West Coast bounce, with Swae delivering a catchy rapped hook that describes a party where women enter in "disorderly fashion." RJ's urgent raps further flesh out a unique dynamic between the rappers.
The album also features contributions from familiar faces to RJ including YG, Ty Dolla $ign, and Joe Moses, as well as O.T. Genasis and Bino Rideaux.
