Statik Selektah is one of the game's most slept on producers, yet he remains one of the most respected. The Boston artist has been slowly revealing the sounds of his upcoming project 8, which is set to drop on December 8th; he's already released tracks with Run The Jewels, 2 Chainz, Wiz Khalifa, Westside Gunn, Conway, and more. Now, he's back with another laid-back cut, teaming up with G-Eazy, Joey Bada$$ and Enisa, who delivers the track's hook. The instrumental is refreshingly subdued, allowing ample space for the rappers to paint a lyrical picture, and both Gerald and Joey hold it down. In fact, it's exactly the type of beat that might have been welcomed on Joey's B4.Da.$$ album, and thus, he makes short work of it.
In an interview with Complex, Statik broke down some of the behind-the-scenes surrounding this one. "It was dope just sending the track with nothing on it to G-Eazy and seeing what he did, then Joey following the theme," he says, via email. "Especially cuz Joey did the verse a few months ago referencing his gold soon to be plaque [for "Devastated"], and this week it just went platinum. Life imitates art and back around. Enisa brought it up a notch with the chorus she wrote and sang as well. She didn’t even tell me till afterwards that she was in one of Joey's class[es] in high school! Crazy."
For more from Statik Selektah, stay tuned for 8, coming soon.
